In Indian homes, dry fruits are a popular choice when it comes to eating daily munchies. The chewy flesh with a naturally sweet flavour is not only a treat to eat but also provides you nutrition. Be it raisins, dates, dehydrated mangoes, or berries, there are lots of options to choose from and mix-match with other health enhancers such as nuts and seeds for a guilt-free treat.

Nutritionist Avni says among these, the one dry fruit that stands out for its amazing health benefiting properties is fig or anjeer, a member of the mulberry family. This small bell or pear-shaped fruit is commonly available in its dried form throughout the year, but as the saying goes, there is nothing like consuming it fresh. The sweet juicy filled with crunchy seeds is a delight to eat.

This blog by India’s top Nutritionist and Dietician Avni Kaul talks about health benefits that one can get from Figs.

Weight Management

Figs help in weight management as high-fiber foods like these have a good impact. Fiber creates an essential part of your daily diet. Not only is fiber beneficial for our digestive system, but it has also been associated with a reduced risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes. Foods having high fiber make one feel full and satiated for long which is why figs easily fit in your weight-loss strategies.

As per a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a fiber-rich diet can help in shedding the extra kilos. But as dried figs are also high in calories, make sure that you consume little quantities of it on a daily basis. Ancient practices also mention dried figs as a good source for gaining weight in a healthy way. However, portion control is the key.

Promotes Reproductive Health

Ancient Greeks used to consider figs to be a sacred fruit and a natural aphrodisiac. It represented fertility and love. In ancient India also, figs were eaten with milk.  Figs are rich in minerals like zinc, manganese, magnesium, and iron, and therefore they contribute in boosting reproductive health.

Good for Bone Health

Figs that are dried are a good source of calcium. Our body requires approximately 1000mg of calcium each day to meet the daily requirement of the mineral. Because calcium isn’t produced by the body, what one eats solely contributes to the body’s need.

Mostly one fails to meet the set requirement in spite of having milk, which is the highest source of calcium. Thus, it is essential to include other food sources of calcium like figs in our diet.

Maintains Blood Sugar

The high potassium quantity in fig helps in regulating the blood sugar level in your body, thus keeping a check on the amount of sugar that is absorbed after meals. A high potassium diet is, therefore, said to help diabetics. The chlorogenic acid present in figs reduces blood sugar levels and control blood-glucose levels in type-2 diabetes.
