Green Beans are one of the oldest cultivated vegetables. There are several varieties of green beans that you could pick from – String beans, French beans, Snap beans all of which are high in vitamins A, C, and K. They are also an excellent source of folic acid, heart-protective calcium, and fiber.

Many may have hated seeing them in your lunchbox, but the reality is that green beans are some of the most nutritious vegetables children can eat, says Avni Kaul.  And your parents knew that well.

This blog by India’s eminent nutritionist and dietitian, Avni Kaul, shares some of the incredible health benefits of green beans.

Energy

Green beans have about twice the amount of iron when compared to spinach. Iron is a component of red blood cells which transports oxygen from the lungs to cells throughout our body. If you are struggling due to anemia, dripping energies, or low metabolism – then green beans are the food you need.

Bone Health

There is plenty of Vitamin K in green beans, which activates osteocalcin which is the major non-collagen protein found in bones. This compound locks calcium molecules together inside the bone, boosting them from within.

Good for Skin, Hair, and Nails

This nutritional storehouse can do wonders for your skin, hair, and nails. Green beans are filled with  easily absorbed kind of silicon, which is essential for the formation of healthy connective tissues, strengthening of nails, and improving skin health.

Aids Heart Health

Green beans have high amount of calcium and heart-protective flavonoids. Flavonoids are polyphenolic antioxidants that are usually found in fruits and vegetables. The high amounts of flavonoids have great anti-inflammatory properties, which regulate thrombotic activity in the cells and prevent blot clots in the arteries.

Beneficial for Eyesight

It plays an effective role in preventing macular degeneration (a condition responsible for the decrease in vision and eye function). They are also high in lutein and Zeaxanthin which support and maintain good eyesight and night vision.

There are several ways to eat green beans. One can have them alone, or mix them in their salads, stews, and soups. One can also add them with poultry and meat. It is best to have them whole and not cut them to preserve its nutritional contents.
