One of the major causes of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a poor or sedentary lifestyle. Remaining physically inactive, taking excessive stress, not sleeping adequately, smoking, and regularly consuming alcohol are some factors that lead to hormonal imbalance and put an individual at a greater risk of PCOS. The condition causes symptoms such as irregular periods or no periods completely, problems in getting pregnant because of inconsistent ovulation, excessive hair growth on the face, chest, body, weight gain, thinning of hair, or loss of hair from the head, oily skin or acne.

Nutritionist Avni Kaul says that with diet and a healthy lifestyle, one can keep PCOS in check and reverse it too.

PCOS and Lifestyle, Things You Need to Know

The diet, amount of physical activity, exercise, sleeping, and stress levels also determines the severity and risk of PCOS. Maintaining a balance in all those things is crucial to reduce PCOS-related symptoms.

This blog, by India’s Top Nutritionist and Dietician, Avni Kaul, talks about how lifestyle changes could help you to deal with PCOS and also reverse it’s symptoms.

Diet

It is not about following a fad diet. A balanced diet with all food groups and nutrients is needed. One needs to eat healthily and in moderation. Refrain from eating everything that comes in a packet. Processed foods should be avoided. Even when one is craving something tangy or savory, cook it at home with natural ingredients, nothing very exotic or fancy. Include high fiber foods, lean proteins, omega 3, and magnesium-based foods in your diet. Also stay away from refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white potatoes, muffins, and other savouries made of white flour.

Refrain from Using Plastic in All Forms

From water bottles to packets, containers, and all cutlery, try to refrain from using plastic items in your kitchen. Studies have shown that women with PCOS are more vulnerable to exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), which is found in multiple household items. Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29373882/

Try to Quit Alcohol and Smoking

Alcohol has nothing but empty calories. If you wish to drink alcohol and enjoy it,  practice moderation. Refrain from mixing drinks and drinking regularly. Have a glass of water after every drink and drink slowly. Quit smoking as it harms your body in more ways than you can imagine.

Exercise Daily

Consistency in daily exercise is the key. You do not have to go overboard with it and overdo it. Even 30 to 40 minutes of exercise every day can help you to reduce weight and be physically and mentally fit. Ensure you exercise daily and include all kinds of workouts in your routine, such as cardio, weight training and yoga. Yoga has a calming impact on the mind which reduces stress. Therefore it is recommended for dealing with PCOS effectively.
