Table of Contents

When you get strike by a headache you may run through your normal routine. Turn off the lights, lie down and have a pill. But did you know that certain foods can ease, and even prevent, headaches?

Nutritionist Avni Kaul says headaches do not always happen because of after-party effects. But mostly they are always a downer. And sadly, this is very common. Though causes of headaches are numerous such as environmental and physiological.

In this article, Nutritionist and Dietician Avni Kaul talks about foods that can help soothe a headache.

Baked Potato

The thing you love with dinner could help soothe your aching head, particularly if your headache is alcohol-related. Since alcohol is a diuretic, it can not only cause dehydration but also makes you lose electrolytes like the potassium. Eating potassium-rich foods can help to remove hangover-related headaches. This is where a baked potato with the skin is one of the best sources of potassium, containing a good 721 mg. By comparison, a banana serves around 467 mg.

Almonds

Magnesium, available in almonds, can protect your body from the attack of a headache by relaxing blood vessels. Migraine sufferers can also experience relief by following a diet high in magnesium. To increase your magnesium consumption by eating almonds.

Yogurt

When your head is pounding, your body might be calling out for calcium. The brain depends on calcium to work efficiently. Make sure you are consuming calcium-rich foods, like yogurt, which is a good source of calcium, with no added sugars and beneficial probiotics for your gut.

Sesame Seeds

Add them on salads, in oatmeal or on top of soups. Why? These small seeds pack a big nutritional punch. “Sesame seeds are high in vitamin E, which also helps to stabilize estrogen levels and stop migraines during your period. It also improves circulation, which helps prevent headaches. An added benefit, sesame seeds are also high in magnesium, which also gives them added headache-preventing ability.

Spinach

Spinach has been known to help decrease blood pressure, prevent hangovers and also help to alleviate headaches. Try having spinach leaves rather than lettuce for a headache-preventing salad.” This summer salad is packed with headache-soothing qualities.

Water

Hydrate generally, because dehydration is a major trigger for headache, water is a good line of defense against them even better if added with a pinch of electrolyte-rich salt or a squeeze of lemon. Try carrying a water bottle with you all through the day.
