Those who have ever dealt with migraines will agree that it is impossible to express in words the terrible recurrent throbbing headaches that usually last for two to three days.

According to Migraine Research Foundation, an estimated one billion people suffer migraine attacks worldwide, making it the third common illness and the most common neurological condition in the world. There is no cure for the condition yet.

There are certain foods, however, that if included in the diet, can bring immediate relief to the patients. India’s most renowned Dietician, Avni Kaul, suggests some of the key foods that can help the migraine situation.

A glass of ginger lemon water

Ginger lemon drink, i.e. one glass of water mixed with 1-inch grated ginger and mint leaves mixed with one tablespoon of lemon juice is an excellent natural detox drink that does wonders for weight loss, improves digestion, immune system and also helps in reducing inflammation and migraine.

A glass of cumin cinnamon water

Cumin and cinnamon are powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory spices that help fight diabetes, help in weight loss and enhance the immune system. These spices also relieve migraine pain. To make the drink, boil one glass of water. Add a teaspoon of cumin seeds and a 1-inch of cinnamon stick to it. Let it boil for five minutes, strain the drink and drink it warm.

Broccoli for Menstrual Migraine

In many female patients, a fall in estrogen level in the body before menstruation triggers migraine. Women who have this type of migraine would benefit from increasing their intake of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. Cruciferous vegetables contain hormonally active compounds called phytoestrogens, which can have estrogenic, or estrogen-like, effects in humans *.

Spinach and leafy vegetables

Several scientific studies including those done by the Association of Migraine Disorders** have found that people with migraine commonly have low brain magnesium levels. Regular intake of magnesium supplements has been found to provide relief from the pain. Spinach that is rich in magnesium can work wonders during migraine.
